AI4Green: A CELTIC-NEXT Project Success Story
The AI4Green project, launched in September 2019 and concluded in December 2022, tackled one of the most pressing challenges of modern telecommunications: reducing energy consumption in 5G networks. With a consortium of 17 partners spanning five countries and a budget of €5.45M, AI4Green pioneered AI-driven solutions to optimize mobile network energy efficiency without compromising performance.
Key Achievements
- Dynamic Energy Management: AI algorithms developed during the project enabled real-time energy optimization, resulting in up to 30% savings in mobile networks.
- Crowd Tracking with AI: Tested at large-scale events, such as a football match in Istanbul, AI-adapted coverage demonstrated significant efficiency gains by predicting crowd movement and peak traffic patterns.
- Innovative Solutions: The project’s research fed into real-world tools like BI Nordic’s CrowdZine product and produced several open-source algorithms.
- Recognition: AI4Green earned the prestigious Eureka Innovation Award and CELTIC-NEXT Excellence Award in 2024.
Led by trailblazers like Cicek Cavdar of KTH, AI4Green exemplifies how international collaboration and female leadership can drive sustainable innovation in telecommunications.
